Abstract

Quantum information has dramatically changed information science and technology, looking at the quantum nature of the information carrier as a resource for building new information protocols, designing radically new communication and computation algorithms, and ultra-sensitive measurements in metrology, with a wealth of applications. From a fundamental perspective, this new discipline has led us to regard quantum theory itself as a special theory of information, and has opened routes for exploring solutions to the tension with general relativity, based, for example, on the holographic principle, on non-causal variations of the theory, or else on the powerful algorithm of the quantum cellular automaton, which has revealed new routes for exploring quantum fields theory, both as a new microscopic mechanism on the fundamental side, and as a tool for efficient physical quantum simulations for practical purposes. In this golden age of foundations, an astonishing number of new ideas, frameworks, and results, spawned by the quantum information theory experience, have revolutionized the way we think about the subject, with a new research community emerging worldwide, including scientists from computer science and mathematics.

Abstract

Annotation The development of mathematical techniques, combined with new possibilities of computational simulation, have greatly broadened the study of non-linear lattices, a theme among the most refined and interdisciplinary-oriented in the field of mathematical physics. This Special Issue mainly focuses on state-of-the-art advancements concerning the many facets of non-linear lattices, from the theoretical ones to more applied ones. The non-linear and discrete systems play a key role in all ranges of physical experience, from macrophenomena to condensed matter, up to some models of space discrete space-time.

Abstract

This compendium is designed as a review of basic mathematics topics and is mainly aimed at students who are looking for valuable help to integrate their knowledge and correct their deficiencies in the subject, as well as to succeed in the math admission test of the University of Florence. The topics covered are divided into five macro areas: Numbers, Powers and Radicals, Literal calculation, Equations, Inequalities and absolute value, Exponential and logarithmic functions. For each one of the topics, the fundamental theoretical notions are offered with specific examples and a selection of single questions, thanks to which the student can immediately check their knowledge. Moreover, there is also a section collecting all the answers to the questions with extensive examination on the correct process and on the possible errors. This analysis represents the real strength of this work since it allows students to self-evaluate and learn from their mistakes.

Abstract

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is a prototypical dispersive nonlinear partial differential equation that has been derived in many areas of physics and analyzed mathematically for many years. With this book, we aim to capture different perspectives of researchers on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising from theoretical, numerical, and experimental aspects. The eight chapters cover a variety of topics related to nonlinear optics, quantum mechanics, and physics. This book provides scientists, researchers, and engineers as well as graduate and post-graduate students working on or interested in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an in-depth discussion of the latest advances in nonlinear optics and quantum physics.

Abstract

Cognition implies perception and judgement. Perception consists in interpreting a sensory stimulus: it is a common process in every animal with a brain, and can be described as a Bayesian inference where the interpretive algorithm is stored in long-term memory. Judgement, on the other hand, is related to the comparison between two perceptions which are coded in a language, in that short-term memory presents the first perception once again and compares it with the second. This operation is called inverted Bayes' theorem and while it does not presuppose an algorithm, it builds a new one using comparison. The book shows how the algorithmic leaps related to linguistic operations capture aspects of reality which cannot be reached through Bayesian chains of inference following the same algorithm. Nowadays, we experience the successes of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which, however, works thanks to a direct Bayes' theorem and speeds up recursive chains, but does not resort to algorithmic leaps; therefore, it does not contribute to human language.

Abstract

This thesis reports the results of studies conducted at LAboratory for Molecular Magnetism (LA.M.M.) of the University of Firenze concerning the synthesis and characterization of rare-earth free nanostructured materials for permanent magnet applications. Ferrite-based magnetic materials doped with transition metal ions are studied with particular attention to the correlation between their magnetic properties and nanostructures. Firstly, the magnetic behaviour of single-phase ferrites nanocrystals with enhanced anisotropy was analysed, in order to under stand the correlation between the final properties and particle size, shape, crystallinity, composition, etc. Then, hybrid bi magnetic core|shell nanoparticles were prepared focusing on the aftermath and required conditions of exchange-coupling establishment between the two moieties.

Abstract

This book presents a survey of Topology and Differential Geometry and also, Lie Groups and Algebras, and their Representations. The first topic is indispensable to students of gravitation and related areas of modern physics, (including string theory) while the second has applications in gauge theory and particle physics, integrable systems and nuclear physics. Part I provides a simple introduction to basic topology, followed by a survey of homotopy. Calculus of differentiable manifolds is then developed, and a Riemannian metric is introduced along with the key concepts of connections and curva
